"The nature of risk is to conceal itself and what it hides behind is the edifice of normality and the human tendency to ignore uncertainty."
Founded in Naperville, Illinois a western suburb of Chicago in 2010, 3WON was developed to serve the needs of physicians, and other medical professionals, hospitals and health systems, health plans, and consumers and patients. Our objective is to produce a more effective and efficient online ecosystem for them to connect, communicate and transact with one another. Think of it as a LinkedIn™ for the healthcare industry where physicians can easily identify, connect and communicate with each other, and similarly, where patients can identify, locate and connect with medical professionals, online, using medical directories that accurately reflect current demographic information about medical professionals and their practices.
Today, the average medical directory has a 60-70% accuracy rate. This is because the data used to populate medical directories ages at a rate of two-percent each month. Medical professional data is sourced from multiple resources but it originates from individual practitioner’s when they provide information about themselves, and their practice (their credentials), to hospitals and health systems, and health plans, with who they seek to affiliate. Typically, their data is updated every two to three years, although certain aspects of their profile may be updated on a more frequent basis throughout the course of the year. Therefore, it is conceivable that over the course of three-years, information about a doctor found online may have a 25% accuracy rate. This reduces access to care for patients seeking health care services and results in considerable re-work in the provider-payer contractual relationship. According to AHIP, inaccurate provider data results in over $40 billion in additional administrative expense annually.
When health plans do not have accurate information about physicians it creates a myriad of costly issues related to claim payment adjudication, fee schedule application, and network management. This has the potential to reduce healthcare provider cash flow resulting in costly remediation processes for both providers and payers, sometimes impacting patients financially. Accurate provider data reduces these error rates.
3WON seeks to eliminate these error rates and substantially improve the patient experience in the provision of healthcare services. We accomplish this by maintaining current profiles of each and every medical professional in our master provider file. How we accomplish this is our competitive advantage and what makes us unique in provider data management.
Provider data includes names and aliases; affiliations such as accepted health plans and privileged hospitals; office locations and hours; languages spoken and culturally competent care; training and education; specialties; licenses, insurance and other data germane to the professional and the medical practice. 3WON maintains over 1,150 data elements on active physicians of which 355 are typically required for hospital credentialing for appointment (privileging) purposes.
Provider Data Pain Points in Common Use Cases
A claim with missing or inaccurate provider data causes payment processing failures or denials, resulting in increased calls to the provider support hotlines and health plan outreach to providers to gather and validate information for adjudication.
Inaccurate provider contact information results in providers and consumers being unable to locate specialists or other providers.
If health plans and health systems are unable to collect and evaluate provider qualifications expeditiously, it will delay when a provider can treat patients and bill for services.
Inaccurate provider directories impact consumers’ abilities to successfully access network providers, leaving health plans vulnerable for the costs of out-of-network
care and subject to penalties.
Regulators and health plans rely on provider data to ensure program integrity; when data isinaccurate, resourcesmustbeexpendedtoresolvediscrepancies, andfraud, abuse and waste may go undetected.
Inaccurate electronic addresses thwart clinical data exchange among care team members.
